Orpheus park is located in Encinitas, a Northern neighbor of San
Diego, California. Although we are more fortunate than many parks around the Country, having a panoramic ocean view and year-round temperate climate, there are some who would trade either of these benefits for longer park hours... Obviously, the four-legged visitors are almost unanimous in this view! |
| | | | | | Orpheus park was created from a vacant land area in 1990 and became a dog park in 1995.
The birth was not easy! In 1991 Encinitas Mayor Gail Hano foresaw the impending city development and crowding with no plans for pet areas. By 1993 she began pushing hard in City Council for leash free parks, particularly at the B Street (Viewpoint) and Orpheus Parks. She also tried for beach access for dogs, but both proposals failed to pass. She believed that the pet and people socialization process might help to re-establish old fashioned neighborhood rapport. By 1994 a leash free trial period at the park was authorized. With growing public support, in 1995 Mayor Hano finally saw her cause passed into law. Off leash hours: 6-7:30 AM and 4-6 PM M, W, F. |
